Follow the road past the Agricultural Cooperative—an excellent spot to buy local olive oil—and keep left towards the dirt road. If you are driving, you can park your car right here.
From the dirt road, a gentle ascent begins. After 200 meters, a signpost directs you to the right, and in less than five minutes, you will reach the mills. The reward is a magical 270-degree panorama of the sea, the lush plain, the Dafnon riverbed, and the imposing Kokkinovrachos.
(B) Prophet Elias Hike Overview
Prophet Elias Chapel (Profitis Ilias)
This highly rewarding route takes you to the picturesque, whitewashed chapel of Prophet Ilias, offering an endless vantage point over the Leonidio plain and the sea.
The hike starts from Koilaso, the settlement just across the bridge from Leonidio’s center. You will enter a fragrant pine forest and follow a beautifully built stone path straight up to the chapel and its old well. You can return via the same path, which takes about 40 minutes in total.
If you want to extend your adventure, you can turn this into a loop. From the chapel, continue on the marked trail towards the Merochoro plateau (at 493m), passing old estates and an antenna tower. The trail then descends past the abandoned, two-story stone structures of the Vlamiko pen and an old lime kiln before looping back to Koilaso.
The full loop is 6.6 km, taking roughly 3 hours with a +350m elevation gain.

Pragmateftis Village

To return, walk down to the main road and either catch a local bus or hitchhike back to Leonidio.
If you want to keep walking, a well-preserved, stone-paved path along the ridge connects Pragmateftis to the next village, Pera Melana -where you can reward yourself with great food at the local tavern. This extension adds 4.3 km, 1.5 hours, and +200m of elevation.

Sitting at an altitude of over 450 meters, this ruined Frankish castle dates back to the 13th and 15th centuries. Make sure not to stop at the ruins; head 100 meters further to the Agios Athanasios Chapel for uninterrupted panoramic views over Plaka, Lakkos Bay, and the coastline.
The trailhead is located along the winding road connecting Plaka to the mountain village of Tsitalia. Park on the roadside near the brown archaeological sign, making sure you do not block traffic. Avoid parking directly under the crumbly cliffs due to the risk of falling rocks. From the sign, a steep, continuous ascent begins. About a third of the way up, the path forks—keep left towards the castle (the right path continues to Tsitalia).

By Car
Driving is the easiest way not only to reach Leonidio but mainly to explore its surrounding hidden beaches and mountain villages. Since there are no car rental agencies in town, it is highly recommended to secure a vehicle at major transport hubs like Athens or Kalamata airports before starting your trip.
Taking the fast, modern A7 toll highway is highly recommended over the slower toll-free roads. After exiting towards Argos and passing Astros, you will drive along a beautiful two-lane coastal route overlooking the Myrtoan Sea. Just keep in mind that the final coastal stretch from Arcadiko Chorio to Leonidio (30km, about 50min) is extremely winding with continuous blind curves, requiring cautious driving.
This route utilizes the modern A7 motorway heading north before transitioning to the eastern provincial roads. The drive eventually merges with the coastal route at Arcadiko Chorio, meaning the same winding, 45-minute final stretch described above applies here as well.
The streets inside the traditional settlement of Leonidio are famously narrow and labyrinthine; driving through them can easily lead to a scratched rental car.
Your best bet is to leave your vehicle at the large, free public parking area located right on the dry riverbed of the Dafnonas River at the edge of town. It is safe, spacious, and only a short, scenic walk from the main square.
By Bus (KTEL)
With no train network in the region, public transport relies entirely on regional KTEL buses. There are generally 3 to 4 daily departures from Athens and just as many from Tripoli, which acts as the main transit hub for the area and the transfer point if you are traveling from elsewhere in the Peloponnese.
The bus conveniently drops you off right at the heart of Leonidio, making it very easy to reach most guesthouses on foot.
Buses depart from the Kifissos Terminal in Athens. Daily departures to Leonidio are at 08:30, 11:00 (via Tripoli), and 16:30, plus an extra 18:00 service on Fridays. For the return trip (Leonidio to Athens), buses leave at 06:00 (except Sundays), 08:30, 14:00 (via Tripoli), and 16:30.
There is no direct route, so you must first travel to Tripoli (about 1h 20m) and transfer to a Leonidio-bound bus (another 2h). You can book your Kalamata to Tripoli tickets online, but for the Tripoli-Leonidio leg, online schedules and tickets are unavailable.
